RACE WEEKEND DETAILS


To the women who will be running Made to Move in Madison on June 11, here is a message from Mel with everything you need to know about your race weekend!

Race week is fast approaching!

I wanted to give you a personal rundown of all the events happening both Friday and Saturday, and specifically, how I’d suggest spending your time at the Garver Feed Mill on Friday! We’ve got just the right amount of shopping, yoga, speakers, inspiration and fun awaiting you. 

And here’s the thing: If your schedule allows, I want you to stay and enjoy the day with us.  

We’ve created an easy yet intentional day for all our participants, and we’ve created some meaningful and fun ways for you to arrive, explore, move, listen, learn, shop, enjoy and just BE for an afternoon.

If you haven’t yet registered for our Made to Inspire event, I totally get it. We actually didn’t have the full event description on the website until just a couple of weeks ago, in part because Lindsey, Toni and I were thinking so much about what we bring forward as the MOST necessary and impactful conversation we could have with all of you!! We want this conversation to matter, and we’re all leaning in HEAVY to the theme of reclaiming our stories as women and athletes. It’s going to be so, so good.

If you want to attend but don’t want the hassle of logging back into RunSignup, simply venmo us at @fellowflowers and that will work JUST fine. Cost is $15 and just put your name in the comment section. #doneanddone

If you have a friend who is not participating in MTM but would love to see Lindsey and Toni speak, please encourage them to attend! They do not need to be registered for the race to enjoy this special evening of inspiration. Just have them venmo as well.

And yes, if you forget to venmo us, you can still show up and pay at the door. It’s totally fine. 

Also, please know this: If cost is preventing you from attending, here’s where I tell you to show up anyway. For real. We’ve got you. No questions asked. We have no fancy way of checking you in for this event other than smiling at you and saying welcome. 

Okay, on to the nitty gritty schedules … 

FRIDAY

9-10 am - Two-mile shakeout run with Lindsey Hein and local run coach Anne Tully
Leave from Garver, and we’ll hang for coffee and conversation afterward!

2-6 pm - Made to Market
Pick up your race packet, explore and check out three of Garver’s great female-run businesses — KOSA Spa, Perennial Yoga and the Glitter Workshop — all of which have special offerings for Made to Move runners!!

3:15-4 pm - Restorative yoga + stretching with Toni Carey
Don’t be intimidated. If you can lay on the floor and stretch, this class was MADE for you. This class takes place at Perennial Yoga on the second floor of Garver. If possible, please bring your own yoga mat.

4-5 pm - Made to Evolve speaker session with JulieAnn Villa
This session is a MUST. JulieAnn inspires me every single day, and she’ll help all of us reflect, own and reclaim the messy yet beautiful parts of our journey.

6 pm - Private bar opens for all guests of Made to Inspire
Complimentary appetizers and beverages for all those attending Made to Inspire. Don’t miss out (snacks are important). Also, huge thanks to Molson Coors for sponsoring some summer-vibes beverages for everyone to enjoy!

6:30-8 pm - Made to Inspire event with Lindsey Hein, Toni Carey and Mel Charbonneau
How have the last two years changed you? Where do you belong now? What goals feel good in this new chapter of life? We’re asking the big questions, we’re sharing the stories and we’re going there. And YES, we’ll have time for Q&A!

Additional ways to experience Garver Feed Mill:

Stop by the Glitter Workshop and make your very own bath bomb! Made to Move participants are welcomed guests all afternoon and the Glitter team will walk you through how to make your very own bath bomb creation. (Can you say post-race relaxing?!) You’ll likely find a retail treasure or two while perusing Glitter’s insanely cute and handmade goods as well! Jewelry, candles, gifts, and more!

Pop into Perennial Yoga to glimpse their absolutely stunning studio and space and to pick up a special offer — a free-class pass for Made to Move runners! Perennial creates such a wonderful community both at their Garver and Fitchburg locations, and the pass is redeemable at either spot. 

Visit KOSA, the most beautiful spa specializing in Ayurvedic treatments. Believe me, once you step into the tranquility of this space, you’ll want to return for a massage, facial or body treatment. And if you need more enticing, please know that Made to Move runners who stop by the spa will receive a special gift and a coupon for a discount on a future spa service! 

Delicious dining options:

Ian’s Pizza. Those two words should pretty much do the convincing! This iconic Madison establishment is the perfect stop if you’re looking for easy ‘grab and go’ style food while joining us on Friday afternoon! Stop by before the market opens or make this your 5 pm early dinner before the private bar opens for Made to Inspire! Want a sneak peek of the menu? Check it out here. And yes, you should definitely get two slices. (They also have amazing salads as well.)

If you’re looking for more menu options, you will LOVE the Garver Lounge. It’s literally on the other side of the curtain from our market, and it makes enjoying a sit-down meal super convenient (especially if you don’t want to leave before Made to Inspire). Swanky, casual and, frankly, it’s just a whole vibe! The Garver Lounge is open 4-10 pm, and the menu changes every week — check it out here — to provide the best local fare around!

SATURDAY

Location 

The race will start and finish in the same spot, near the Henry Vilas Park. The address of the park is 1602 Vilas Park Dr., Madison, WI. You can utilize nearby parking lots and there is ample street parking as well. 

Official race start time

All three distances (5K, 10K and half marathon) will start at 8:30 am. All three distances will head out together and the course will be marked for when the 5K and 10K/half courses split. 

If you are looking to test your competitive spirit and desire that ‘rush’ of the start line gun going off, you are welcome to toe the line for a competitive ‘all at once’ start.

Arrival before race

Please arrive no earlier than 7:30 am to the race site. This lets our team focus on setting up and making sure we’re ready for you! Also, stay cool and off your feet before the race! There is plenty of street parking around the race site. 

We will be utilizing the Vilas Shelter for bathrooms before the race! This is also a good spot for staying in the shade prior to the race as well, and there is tree coverage near/around the start line! 

Packet pick-up

Unless you have registered for race day packet pick-up, you must get your packet between 2-6 pm at Garver Feed Mill during our market. We will allow others to pick up your race bib if needed.

Race day pick-up (if you chose and paid for this option) is from 7:30-8 am. To help our small but mighty staff, please arrive within this timeframe!

Race courses

The UW Arboretum’s 6.2-mile “Arb Loop” is one of Madison’s most iconic running routes — and the centerpiece of our races. 

All races will start and finish in the same spot, near the Henry Vilas Park at 1602 Vilas Park Dr. Our race courses will be marked and have cones for added safety, but outside of our finish/start area, it will not be closed to traffic. That said, the majority of this course is through the Arboretum with limited (and slow) traffic.

Our signature 10K makes one pass through the Arb loop course — a must-do running experience in Madison!

Our brand-new half marathon takes two loops through the Arboretum, which means you get to run through our amazing cheer zone at the start, midway point and finish. 

Our fun 5K is perfect for runners and walkers alike, and stroller-friendly as well. The course offers great views throughout some of Madison’s most charming neighborhoods. 

All events will be timed by Race Day Events.

Bathrooms - pre/post-race

We will be utilizing the Vilas shelter for restrooms — it is rented and ours for the morning. 

Bathrooms - on-course

Like last year, we will be utilizing the UW Arboretum Visitor Center’s porta potty for anyone who needs it. This is open to the public, and it is located in the Visitor Center parking lot near the building. It’s important to note you do have to go through the parking lot to use it, but we’ll have signage there to guide you! 

Hydration

We will have water available before, during and after the race. Our team will have a few coolers of Gatorade for those who need a little something extra after the race as well. Just visit the info tent!

On-course support + info

5K - Water station at approximate halfway point; please note there are NO bathrooms on this route.

10K - Three water stations on course; porta potty (in Arboretum Visitor Center parking lot) available at mile 3.5.

Half marathon - Seven total water stations on course; porta potty (in Arboretum Visitor Center parking lot) available on both half marathon loops.

For ANY of these distances, if you typically require more hydration than what we’re able to provide, please plan accordingly and bring water with you. 

The course will have mileage markers and will be marked with important turns. All roads being used by Made to Move will have a coned off portion for runners. Please note the course is not closed to traffic, so be mindful of your surroundings while running.

The course will have two blocks where we’re using the sidewalk instead of the street. This will be on Monroe Street before entering into the Arboretum area. Be mindful of this transition from road to sidewalk!

We are so excited to have Angie Krey (photos) and Steena and John Cirves (video) with us on race morning! They will be capturing as many smiles, finish line moments and joyful celebrations as possible. Don’t be surprised if they ask you to smile for a photo OR ask you to answer a question or two for our videos. Thank you in advance!

Post-race fun

Please feel free to stick around after your race! We’ll have some hydration and nutrition for you, and we’d love for you to cheer on other runners as they have their finish line moment. Seriously, the finish line had the most amazing energy last year, and let’s keep that momentum going!!

Saturday evening: Made to Celebrate

All I’m going to say is this: If you can make it, be there. Lindsey Hein will be joining me and the MTM team for an unplugged conversation on ALL that we have to celebrate together. 

This event will be informal, fun and a really special way to reflect on the weekend and so much more. Our goal is for women to gather, reflect on what they’re proud of, cheers to all they’ve accomplished and overcome, and also, look ahead to the future and commit to the promise it holds for each of us. 

And (you read it here first) our team has decided that Made to Celebrate will be the evening where we unveil (for the very first time EVER) some pretty big news about the next chapter of this business. Fun fact: During the same meeting when we decided to create this race, we also decided something even bigger and more significant about this company. This idea was first written on a post-it note in January of 2020, has been worked on patiently and quietly for over two years, and now stands to be the next chapter of what we want this company to become. 

Lindsey already has the inside scoop, and she has SO MANY good questions for us! I promise, it’ll be such a great evening!

The Made to Celebrate details:

The event takes place at the Best Western Plus InnTowner (2424 University Ave.) We’ll gather, enjoy some food (we’ll have lots of yummy hors d’oeuvres) and beverages (each ticket includes a free cocktail or mocktail). This event, which runs 7-10 pm, is ticketed. If you didn’t already register in RunSignup, you can venmo the $25 to @fellowflowers, with your name in the comment section. We would LOVE to see you there!

Also, I want to invite you to join Barbara Berko and Nikki Carter — the incredible women coordinating our team leaders who have offered inspiration and community to Made to Move runners who opted to join a team this year — as they host Made to Connect, a virtual gathering held on Wednesday, June 8 at 7 pm CST. It’s going to be a wonderful evening of sharing stories and celebrating our journeys to race day. (Watch your email for the Zoom link coming in a few days!) I hope you’ll join us!
